we walked through the ornamental iron gates on boulevard saint michel. light was fading at the end of a brisk grey overcast day yet the gardens were bustling with parisians. we saw young women pushing babies in stollers, women bundled in fashionable winter coats walking actively as they conversed, and older men with gloved hands clasped behind their backs walking slowly and deliberately. like most large parks in paris joggers circulated in laps. there was a bit of a cool breeze.

margueritte and i took photos of each other with the palais in the background. on some steps below us two uniformed policemen were plainly dissatisfied with the answers they were receiving from an unhappy looking young man in a thin coat, seated beneath them. we were hungry from our long day, visiting three art museums and the pantheon before walking to the edge of the jardin du luxembourg. it was a large and pleasant place, probably dazzling on a warm spring day with the flowers in bloom, but we only surveyed it briefly from the edge and retreated to boulevard saint michel. a large exhibit photographs of nature was displayed on the wrought iron fence of the gardens. the closest metro station was yet four blocks away, so we crossed rue de medicis and turned down boulevard saint michel.
