ISLE of MAN
iom10.jpg - 6865 Bytes Our year of anticipation and planning came true when we travelled with many of our family members to Isle of Man. Located betweed England and Ireland in the Irish Sea, the Isle of Man has one of the oldest governments in the world. We went there as part of the North American Manx Association Homecoming convention. Debbie's grandfather once lived on the Island and we were very interested in visiting the home. iom30.jpg - 6166 Bytes
promenad.jpg - 19373 Bytes We arrived in Douglas in the morning, after being up for nearly 24 hours. We saw the sunset on leaving New York then met the sunrise in London. Douglas is the largest city on the Island and lies on a natural bay. A two mile stretch of road and walkway lined with hotels, shops and restaurants is called the "Promenade".
Our first day was spent close to the hotel but busy enough to stay awake through the day. We worked through the time change the next couple of days, waking up at a more normal time, instead of the 4:30am the first night. Most of the Promenade could be navigated by walking but we occasionally took advantage of the horse-drawn trolly running up and down its length. trolley.jpg - 21881 Bytes
Bride.jpg - 23993 Bytes One of the big advantages to being a convention member is all the island touring we did. We hit just about every part of the island on one day or another. Three busses would park in front of the hotel awaiting the group's daily departures. Many of the Isle of Man's towns are situated along the shoreline giving us many beautiful harbor views. To the left is Andrew at one little chapel in the town of Bride, in the Northeastern part of the island.
