Instructions
1. View at least 3 of the Sample Portfolios listed below.
It will be most helpful for you, when you create your own Portfolio,
if you have examined the sites of people who are in your own industry,
job, or field, and especially in the geographical area where you
want to work. You will have a much better idea of what your colleagues
are doing, what sites for similar businesses, companies, and freelancers
look like, as well as scoping out who you may be competing with
when you begin your job search.
2. Create a web page that contains your
critique of ONE portfolio. You will answer the following
questions about the portfolio:
- What is the complete URL of the portfolio?
- Who is the owner of the portfolio?
- What is your first impression of the Portfolio Home or Opening
Page?
Is it totally clear who the owner is, what s/he offers or is
looking for, what will be found at this site, does it look like
the site of a professional, and does the visitor feel encouraged
and invited to look further, is the load time appropriate?
- Does the organization of the pages and site content make sense,
can the visitor easily find the important elements, and navigate
the various pages easily, do all the links work as expected,
are the download times for the various graphics and images on
all pages appropriate.
- What is your first impression of the resume? Is it immediately
and totally clear who the owner of this resume is, and how to
make contact? Does the resume state what s/he offers or is looking
for? Does the resume have a professional look and feel, and
does the visitor feel encouraged to look more closely, is the
load time appropriate?
- Does the resume contain the required elements listed below:
- Name and Contact Info
- Employment Objective
- Technical Skills Section
- Accomplishments (Experience) Section
- Education Section
- What elements of this site would you use as models for your
own portfolio?
- What elements of the site do you feel need improving?
- On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest, how would you
rate this portfolio?
3. Put a link on your homework page to this critique
page. Make sure you give this page an appropriate title.
4. Be sure to address all of the above items. Please
don't refer to the various elements, or sub-items by number (example:
element 3 is missing...this isn't a useful sentence). Instead,
refer to the various elements and sub-items by the descriptive
critique phrases found above. You may consult the Portfolio
Guidelines, and Resume Guidelines
as a guide to how to critique the portfolio and resume.
