Ancient to Renaissance Art History and Appreciation
History & aesthetic appreciation of Prehistoric, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Early Christian & Medieval art.

Renaissance to Modern Art History and Appreciation
History & aesthetic appreciation of Renaissance, Baroque & Modern Art.

Modern Art History & Appreciation
Art of 19th & 20th centuries, including works of David, Constable, Turner, Rodin, Monet, Renoir, Cassatt, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Picasso, Matisse, Dali, O'Keefe, Hopper, Frankenthaler, Ruscha, Segal & Diebenkorn.

Introduction to Art & Design
An introductory studio course in the fundamentals of art and design using shape, value, texture, line, pattern, color and space through exercises in drawing, painting, and collage. Course is required for the Fine Arts Certificate.

Principles of Color
Study & use of color as an element of art & design. Problems exploring the interaction of color & principles of color harmony. The course is required for the Fine Arts Certificate.

Three Dimensional Design
A problem solving experience in spatial organization & materials. Aesthetics and function will be considered integral to the design process. Investigation of the three dimensional model as a visualizing tool. A required course for the Fine Arts Certificate.

Drawing & Composition I
Basic course in drawing & composition to develop a student's ability to perceive and define shape, mass, contour, volume, and space. Course is required for the Fine Arts Certificate.

Drawing & Composition II
To pursue at greater depth those aspects of drawing offered in Drawing and Composition l, and to introduce additional concepts and a greater variety and combination of media & tools.

Figure Drawing
Drawing the human figure employing the basic concepts & skills covered in Drawing and Composition l, shape, volume, plane, contour, space, light, movement, composition, and expression, using a variety of graphic tools & media,

Watercolor
Painting in water colors, including drawing and composition, light and shade.

Beginning Painting
An introductory course in painting involving the basic elements & dynamics of art such as value, color,texture & space, as well as compositional factors and an introduction to the various problems & potentials of painting(acrylics or oil).

Intermediate Painting
Continuation of the basic pictorial problems & challenges begun in Beginning Painting introducing a greater variety of subject matter, concepts and processes.

Advanced Painting
Continuation of the concerns developed in Intermediate Painting involving more in-depth problem solving individual expression & experimentation with media, methods and materials.

Introduction to Computer Graphics in Art
Introduction to the computer as an image generation, processing & manipulation tool for artists. The computer as a device to assist creative thinking and visual editing.

Computer Graphics II
Introduction to the use of computers as an artistic tool. Students will explore Interactive Multimedia authoring design and photo processing software. Emphasis will be on both technical skills and aesthetic results.

Introduction to the Art of Prints
Introduction to studio in printmaking, techniques include: Cardboard relief prints, wood cut, etching, collagraph, monotype, embossing and linoleum cut.

Beginning Silkscreen Printmaking
Studio course introducing color silkscreen printmaking as a fine art print medium. Demonstrations and assignments involving paper stencil, knife cut blockout and photostencils.

Advanced Silkscreen Printmaking
Continued exploration of the silkscreen process as a fine art print medium. Emphasis on more individual projects at a more advanced level of sophistication.

Beginning Etching
Use of etching process as a means of artistic expression. Learning to etch, ink & wipe a plate to produce multiple like images through a series of structured projects. Presentation of the fine print including care of prints, numbering of editions & matting techniques.

Intermediate Etching
Continuation of beginning etching (Art 28A) with the addition of more advanced techniques for processing and printing of plates. Mixing and wiping of colored inks will accompany integrating advanced etching techniques to yield more personaliz imagery.

Advanced Etching
Culmination of Etching classes. Advanced approaches in color printing, addressing one's own ideas. Students will be encouraged to employ approaches that satisfy his or her own creative direction.

Beginning Pottery
Wheel and hand-building, glaze making and application.

Intermediate Pottery
Wheel and handbuilding. Glaze experimentation.

Advanced Pottery
Wheel & handbuilding. Functional & nonfunctional. Advanced glaze experimentation.

Beginning Sculpture
Basic appreciation & understanding of sculpture including a historical overview. Figurative nonfigurative experiences will be included using a variety of materials and processes. A range of casting,carving & fabricating projects will be presented

Intermediate Sculpture
Intro of more complex processes & larger scale work. Students will create a series of studies showing proficiency in a variety of methods & materials.

Advanced Sculpture
Problems of the professional sculptor including scale, site specific, model presentation & cost estimates.Work towards a specific project goal for a proposed site or exhibition.

Ceramic Sculpture
Concepts/techniques of clay as sculptural material.

Advanced Ceramic Sculpture
Advanced individualized problems in ceramic sculpture.

Elementary Photography
Theory & practice of photography: Basic skills in developing, enlarging, composition, print quality and photographing.

Intermediate Photography
Continuation of Elementary Photography. Emphasis on creativity & perfection of photo techniques. Emphasis also on photographic history & tradition.

Advanced Photography
Further concentration on photo imagery as a means of self-expression.

Graphic Design: Principles of Visual Communication
Introduction to the art of graphic design. Emphasis on design principles, aesthetics and concepts necessary for effective visual communication. Projects explore the creative development of ideas and visual forms including: designing pictographs, symbols, image-based logos, developing identity systems, creating typeand imagery for posters and other applications. Instruction in the use of traditional design tools and and ntroduction to the computer.

Graphic Design: Digital Imaging
Extensive use of the computer to explore the creative development of visual images for graphic design. Introduction of several popular Mac-based graphics software to create original designs for print and screen. Projects explore the manipulation and integration of type and images in a variety of formats. Topics include contemporary design issues, current methods and the aesthetics of design.

Graphic Design: Type & Letterforms
Intro. to art of typography emphasizing a non- technical approach. Focuses on design aesthetics and creative use of letterforms for graphic design. Topics include: drawing letterforms, using type for communication and visual expression, an overview of art movements/design styles. Projects explore development of original alpha- bets, letter-based logos, layouts for posters, books and other graphic designs. Use of traditional tools and intro to computter.

Graphic Design: Digital Layout
Extensive use of the computer as a design tool to develop creative page layouts for print and screenSeveral popular Mac-based software programs are explored to design with text and display type in a variety of formats. Projects include the layout and design of ads, newsletters, booklets, and Web pages.Topics include: design principles, aesthetics, typographic styles

Graphic Design: Poster Production
Advanced graphic design class emphasizing the design, production & printing of posters. While gaining a first-hand experience in production techniques, students will have an opportunity to create highly finished pieces for their portfolios. Use of the computer, process camera & silkscreen printing

Online Art Using the World Wide Web
An online art class exploring the WORLD WIDE WEB for research and display of image and text. Students will learn how to find and create HOMEPAGE information with original images. Class will meet online.

Color Photography
Two-part workshop incl color theory & useage; exposure & development of color films, color printing.

Alternative Photography Processes
The exploration and use of various creative techniques in the production of phota-based imagery. Both black and white and color will be utilized to explore symbolism, abstract images, controls and experimental techniques.

Beginning Jewelry Making
Introduction to design & creation of jewelry using a variety of techniques & tools.

Intermediate Jewelry
Intermediate level of design & creation of jewelry using a variety of techniques & tools.

Advanced Jewelry
Intermediate level of design & creation of jewelry using a variety of techniques & tools.

Digital Photography
The exploration & analysis of digital imaging techniques as applied to photography. Traditional & new electronic photographic methods are studies. Emphasis is placed on the creative process while exploring electronic image making as an effective mode of communication used by photographers, artists and designers today.

Beginning Photography/Non-Darkroom
Intro course for students with little or no knowledge of the photographic process. Hands-on camera experience. No darkroom work.

Collage
A studio course investigating & exercising methods & techniques of collage for pictorial purposes,juxtaposing essentially two-dimensional components of various materials onto a flat surface

Landscape Drawing and Painting
Development of skills in solving the compositional problems encountered in landscape drawing & painting. Selecting appropriate materials & learning to explore mixed media techniques.

Special Studies in Art
An independent study. Check with Department Chair.
