James Mack Ingalls and Melvin Louis Ingalls were in reality the sons of Frances Louise DeLong and her first husband, Marion Louis Muse. James Ingalls was born Jimmy Mack Muse and Mel Ingalls was born Marion Louis Muse Jr. Frances DeLong and Marion Muse divorced when the boys were young. When she married Kent Butler Ingalls, the boys changed their last names to Ingalls and used that name for the rest of their lives. Marion Muse Jr. was called "Mel" from an early age and had his name legally changed to Melvin late in his life. Jimmy Mack Muse used the formal name of James but was always called Jim. |
Chauncey Edward Ingalls (male) | ||
Father | Unknown | Unknown (Out of wedlock) |
Mother | 3 Oct 1851 | Sarah Marie Ingalls |
Birth | 20 Mar 1870 | Austinville, Pa. |
Born out of wedlock. Family anecdote has it that his biological father was a man for whom his mother, Sarah Marie Ingalls, was working, and that that person's name was Harkness. However, at the time of Chauncey's birth, Sarah was living and working in the house of H. B. Austin, a wealthy merchant, according to the 1870 census of Bradford County, Columbia Township, PA. In the 1880 census for Bradford County, Wells Township, Chauncey, age 9, was living with his uncle James K. Ingals and James' wife, Frances (Shephard) Ingals, in the home of Frances' uncle, James D. Osgood. Meanwhile, Sarah Marie was living in Columbia Township (probably Austinville) with her husband, Henry S. Furman, and their three children, Claude, Lydia A. and James H. Furman, according to the 1880 census for Bradford County, Columbia Township, PA. According to his obituary in the Weekly Calistogan, Chauncey came west at age 16 (1886) by himself, going to Klamath Falls, Ore., "to make his home with an uncle." This was certainly James K. Ingalls, who lived in Klamath Falls. Records from the Klamath County, Ore. recorder's office show James purchasing property there as early as 1886. Chauncey apparently left Klamath Falls sometime in the next 10 years, as Klamath County property records also show Chauncey Ingalls purchasing property from James Ingalls in 1896 and refer to Chauncey as a resident of Alameda County, CA. Family anecdote has it that at some point Chauncey lived and worked on a ranch in Susanville, CA, owned by James K. Ingalls. Exactly when that took place is unclear. Chauncey had a long association with Hercules Powder Co. of Hercules, CA. This is known through numerous evidence, including a substantial amount of Hercules stock that came down in the family, family anecdote, and a photo of Chauncey receiving an award from the Panama Pacific International Exposition for work done at Hercules. James Mack (Jim) Ingalls remembers being told by Chauncey that he was in San Francisco in 1906 dynamiting buildings for Hercules after the '06 earthquake. Thus, by 1906, Chauncey Ingalls was clearly not in Oregon or Susanville, and was likely separated from James. By 1910, however, James and Chauncey were headed toward a reunion. The 1910 census for Calistoga, Hot Springs Township, Napa County, CA shows James K. Ingalls living there alone, and Stella Ingalls residing there with her father, John S. Butler, and his family. Chauncey apparently was still in Hercules at this time, but would clearly move up to join them soon after. (An unsigned 1910 "affadavit of birth" for Kent Butler Ingalls, owned by Paul Ingalls, has Kent's birthplace as Calistoga but the residence of both his father and mother -- Chauncey and Stella -- as Hercules, CA.) |

REMEMBRANCES OF PAUL INGALLS: I never called my grandmother anything but "Nonie." How this name came into use I don't know. Nonie used to bake wonderful pies and cakes. She would pick berries -- blackberries or boysenberries -- in the back of her home at the head of town in Calistoga and make the most wonderful pies. I always remember that when I stayed with her I'd sleep on the couch in the front room. Even then, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, you could hear the traffic noises from the nearby intersection that, at that time, was the only stop sign in downtown Calistoga. |

According to family anecdote, Sarah Marie Ingalls was born an Ingalls, then after having one child out of wedlock (Chauncey Edward Ingalls) by a man named Harkness, and one marriage that ended in the suicide of her husband (Henry Furman) she married a man with the same surname as her own. This was William S. Ingalls, her cousin. The 1880 census for Bradford County, Columbia Township, PA supports Sarah Marie's marriage to Furman and the Wells Township census for the same year shows Chauncey Ingalls, age 9, living with James Ingalls, who was his uncle. Research by Paul and Matthew Ingalls suggests that Chauncey Edward Ingalls' actual biological father may have been H.B. Austin, a wealthy merchant. The 1870 census for Bradford County, Columbia Township, PA shows a Sarah Ingels, of the right age, living in Austin's household as a housekeeper. This is consistent with family anecdote. It is also possible, however, that Mr. Harkness was another worker in the Austin household, although his name does not appear in the 1870 census. Sarah Marie Ingalls' Alameda County, CA death certificate says she had been in California 32 years, which means she came to the state in 1895. In a letter to James Mack Ingalls dated 12/28/1985, Lawrence Ingalls says that Sarah Marie, whom he refers to as "Grandma," married "a William Ingalls," and "This all took place in Spring Valley in Minnesota." William S. Ingalls certainly resided in Spring Valley following the death of his first wife in 1887 because pension application records for William S. Ingalls dated 1889 and 1890 give the location as Spring Valley. |

Father | 28 Aug 1817 | Aaron K. Ingalls |
Mother | 22 Nov 1820 | Cordelia Elizabeth Strong |
Birth | 27 May 1841 | Wells Township, PA |
William S. Ingalls was the son of Aaron K. Ingalls; Aaron K. Ingalls was the brother of Benjamin Ingalls, Sarah Marie Ingalls' father. Thus, William S. and Sarah Marie were cousins. William S. Ingalls was a Civil War veteran, for whom, according to family anecdote, Sarah received a pension of $8 a month. Civil War pension records, however, indicate William S. Ingalls was being paid $17 a month at the time of his death and Sarah Marie Ingalls was receiving $30 a month at the time of her death. The index of Civil War veterans shows William S. Ingalls of Company E, 7th Minnesota Infantry applying for a pension on 2/11/1880 and his widow, Sarah M. Ingalls, applying for survivor benefits on 8/29/1897. Sarah Marie Ingalls' death certificate, from Alameda County, CA lists her spouse as "the late William S. Ingalls." William Ingalls was purported to have been a U.S. Marshal in Nevada in the latter part of the Nineteenth Century. Research suggests that this was not true, however. Civil War pension records indicate William S. Ingalls was so sick with rheumatism and hemmoriods after the war that he had a great deal of difficulty working. Perhaps most convincing, however, is the fact that, according to the 1900 census for Hawthorne Township, Esmeralda County, Nevada, a William A. Ingalls was the sheriff there at that time. This is no apparent relation to our family, yet could have been the source of the family anecdote. In any case, William S. Ingalls' name does not appear in the federal records of U.S. Marshals for that time period, as researched by Paul and Matthew Ingalls at the National Archives. It is possible that he was a deputy U.S. Marshal, which would not have showed up in the archival records. Family anecdote has it that two pistols that came down in our family through Chauncey Ingalls were owned by William S. Ingalls. One was supposedly confiscated from an outlaw and the other was William's weapon. This is certainly inaccurate, however, since research indicates the .38 cal. Colt Lightening purportedly owned by William was manufactured in 1903, six years after his death. The .44-40 cal. Colt Frontier Six-Shooter supposedly confiscated by William was manufactured in 1881, however, and may have been his handgun. Civil War military records show that William S. Ingalls was mustered into Co. E, 7th Minnesota Infantry as a private on Aug. 15, 1862 at Ft. Snelling, Minn., having enlisted in Carimona, Minn. He was present with the company through December, 1863, then reported ill and absent from the company in January and February 1864. In March and April, 1864 he was reported "on detached service to Vicksburg, Miss." In May and June 1864 he was once again reported present with his regiment. From July 1864 through April 9, 1865 he was reported ill at Overton U.S. Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He returned to duty on April 10, 1865 and mustered out on Aug. 16, 1865. |
