James K. Ingalls (male)
Father25 Dec 1819Benjamin Ingalls
MotherAbout 1820Mary Anne
BirthAbout 1845Pennsylvania
James Ingalls is a consistent figure in the life of Chauncey Ingalls, his nephew. In the 1880 census for Bradford County, Wells Township, Chauncey, age 9, was living with his uncle James K. Ingals and James' wife, Frances (Shephard) Ingals, in the home of Frances' uncle, James D. Osgood. Meanwhile, Sarah Marie was living in Columbia Township (probably Austinville) with her husband, Henry S. Furman, and their three children, Claude, Lydia A. and James H. Furman, according to the 1880 census for Bradford County, Columbia Township, PA.
According to his obituary in the Weekly Calistogan, Chauncey came west at age 16 by himself, going to Klamath Falls, Ore., "to make his home with an uncle." This was certainly James K. Ingalls, who by that time was living in Klamath Falls. Records from the Klamath County, Ore. recorder's office show a purchase of land by James K. Ingals as early as 1886, the year Chauncey purportedly came to Klamath Falls. Property records from that county also show Chauncey purchasing property from James in 1896 and refer to James as a resident of Klamath County and Chauncy as a resident of Alameda County, CA. Paul and Matthew Ingalls could find no record of James K. Ingalls in Klamath County, OR in the 1900 census, and it is possible that by that time he had moved to property he is known through family anecdote to have owned in Susanville, CA. Family anecdote also has it that at some point Chauncey Ingalls lived and worked on the Susanville ranch. Exactly when, however, is unclear.
It is known through various sources -- including a photo of Chauncy receiving an award from the Panama Pacific International Exposition for work done at Hercules Powder Co. -- that Chauncy worked for Hercules Powder in Hercules, CA, and James Mack Ingalls remembers being told by Chauncy that he was in San Francisco in 1906 dynamiting buildings for Hercules after the '06 earthquake. Thus, by 1906, Chauncy Ingalls was clearly not in Susanville, and may have been separated from James. By 1910, however, James and Chauncy were headed toward a reunion. The 1910 census for Calistoga, Hot Springs Township, Napa County, CA shows James K. Ingalls living there alone, and Stella Ingalls residing there with her father, John S. Butler, and his family. Chauncy apparently was still in Hercules at this time, but would clearly move up to join them soon after.

Frances Shephard (female)
FatherUnknownGeorge H. Shephard
MotherUnknownCharlotte Capron
The identification of Francis Shephard as the maiden name of James Knox Ingalls' wife was arrived at through deduction. In an e-mail communication from J. Kelsey Jones, a historical researcher from New York, Ms. Jones referred to Frances Ingalls as a member of the Shephard family. This coincided logically with several census records. In the 1880 census for Wells, PA., F. Ingals, James Ingals and Chauncey Ingals are found residing in the home of J.D. Osgood. The F. Ingals is certainly James' wife, whose name is known to be Francis from family anecdote and, according to the recollections of Paul Ingalls, also is identified as James' wife in property records from Klamath County, OR. Also found residing in the Osgood household in the 1880 census is Mary Cafron or Capron. In the 1870 census for Wells, PA., Mary Cafron or Capron is residing in the Osgood household with G.H. Shephard and a Frances Shephard, a woman whose age is consistent with that of F. Ingalls in the 1880 census. Based on their ages, G.H. Shephard and Frances Shephard could be assumed to be father and daughter. Mary Cafron or Capron apparently is G.H. Shephard's mother-in-law, since she is 30 years his senior. She is certainly not his wife, since records of the Chemung County Historical Society in Elmira, NY (The Rev. Joseph L. Riggs' book of marriages) indicates George H. Shephard married Charlotte Capron in 1848. These multiple linkages seem sufficient to confirm that Frances Ingalls' maiden name was Frances Shephard. (Shephard is variously spelled Sheperd and Sheperd depending on the source.)

A note on J.D. Osgood: Records of the Mosherville Church list among its founders on 5 Nov 1869 a James I. Osgood. Is this the person we have listed as James D. Osgood? This is a reasonable assumption since Osgood is in the right location and would have been 67 at the time of the church's founding.
