Black & White

The top two photos are scanned digitally with a Nikon slide scanner and digitally enhanced in Photoshop by heightening contrast with the Unsharp Mask filter. I set this filter's levels fairly high to give the images an "edge" that was still controlled with the threshold setting. The first is a close-up of the arm of an antique pitcher. The pitcher is knobbed and I thought this would be striking as a close up. The second image is a spider web.

This is a picture of my daughter, Melinda, taken at the kitchen table with the sun slanting in the window. I scanned directly from an 11 x 17 print because I could still fit the actual image in the borders of my scanner. Little had to be done to "fix" this image except with a few touchups with the clone tool.

I love abstraction and search for it in my work. Photoshop can help images graphically in surprising ways. I darkened the background of the calla lily image to bring out the strong shapes of the sepal. In the thistle image I found that by selecting areas that I wanted to sharpen, I could direct my viewer to focus in on the more interesting "spines" of the thistle's head.
