Napa Valley Open Studios

September 22 -- 23 and 29 -- 30
10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day

Karen is one of ninety Napa Valley artists welcoming people to their studios this year -- she is at Studio #60, at The Right Ranch, 5175 Petrified Forest Road, just west of Calistoga and east of the Petrified Forest.

Come by! You are welcome to delight in color at her studio in a converted chicken coop on a small Calistoga ranch. You can see her vibrantly colored landscape and skyscape paintings, many inspired by her surroundings, create your own painted-collage art bookmark, and enjoy the scenery. While there, be sure to check out the photographic display presenting the process of creating life-sized painted sculptures of Charles Schulz's "Peanuts" comic strip characters.

Karen will also have available a number of small landscapes on paper, painted especially for Open Studios, and promises to crack open a bottle of her brother's amazing wine for the occasion.

For the third and final year in the city of Santa Rosa's Peanuts on Parade public art shows, Karen has created life-sized statues of another favorite character from Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts comic strip -- this year, Snoopy as Joe Cool. This year Karen was fortunate to have the assistance of Darlene Leffler, Geri Tapparo, Shari Forbes, Cathy Stewart, Sharon and Kirsten Kennedy, Nancy and Brian Roberts, Robert Bertolucci, Dan Jenkins, Keira and Teagan Coleman, Karen Famini, and Clive, Eleanor, and Julia Ingalls (yes, it really does take a village...). And once again, she was fortunate in her sponsors -- Northern California Medical Associates and Brooke Clyde.

"Original Joe" -- Charles Schulz's Joe Cool -- can be found, until mid-September, outside the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, while "Dr. Joe Cool, Heart Throb" can be found outside Northern California Medical Associates on Mendocino Avenue, across from Kaiser Hospital.

Featured Articles in the Calistoga Tribune

Karen's work in Peanuts on Parade, and a show of photographs documenting the process of creating two life-sized statues of the Peanuts character Snoopy, were featured in a July article in The Calistoga Tribune.

The September Mud City Weekender, published by the Tribune, features all the Calistoga artists who are part of Napa Valley Open Studios, who will be opening their studios and sharing their artwork and creative processes with their visitors.

Spring, Summer, Fall 2006

The Summer of Woodstock
Napa Valley Open Studios

The Summer of Woodstock

To celebrate fifty-six years of Santa Rosan Charles Schulz's comic strip, Peanuts, the city of Santa Rosa is placing seventy-six life-sized statues of the character Woodstock throughout the city. This year Karen will be painting two statues, with the assistance of Sharon Kennedy, Ashley Duncan, Nina Beety, Pam DeBolt, Darlene Leffler, and Julia, Tyra, and Nathan Ingalls.

Woodstock's Summer of Love is sponsored by Barry W. Meyer, Attorney-at-Law.

You Ain't Nothin' But A Hound Dog is sponsored by Canine Companions for Independence.

Karen and the other artists will bring each statue to life during The Paint-off, from May 9th to May 14th, 2006, at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds, in Grace Pavilion (facing Bennett Valley Road). Visitors are welcome to watch the artists at work Tuesday through Friday between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. and Saturday/Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Some of the statues will join the Rose Parade on May 20th (Woodstock is the Grand Marshall of the parade!), and they will all be placed throughout town for viewing throughout the summer. For more information, visit: http://www.peanutsonparade.com.

Napa Valley Open Studios 2006

This will be Karen's second year as a participant in Napa Valley Open Studios. Her new studio, located just west of Calistoga, near the Petrified Forest, is not all that far from Santa Rosa or Windsor, too. This year Open Studios will run for two weekends, at the end of October and beginning of November. More information to come!
