I cannot believe that the inscrutable universe turns on an axis of
suffering; surely the strange beauty of the world must somewhere
rest on pure joy!

The California Landscape Series

"In 2002, I returned to Sonoma County in California, to live at
Hummingbird Creek Art Studio, not far from the valley in which I
grew up. Surrounded again by oak and bay trees and golden
meadows - a different landscape than the wetlands I had been
painting in the Monterey Bay Area - the colors in my palette
began to change, and I found myself drawn (no pun intended) to
paint them in vibrantly charged yellows and oranges, blues and
greens. It seemed to me then - and does still - that they contain
a kind of visual vitamin C.

"I continue to paint landscapes. I am mostly interested in painting
places which are relatively untouched, or which present a picture
of a rural California that is, unfortunately, rapidly disappearing. My
intention is to invite something of the spirit of the places which I
paint into each painting.

"Most of the paintings here were painted on two northern
California ranches homesteaded in the 1890s, and still owned and
worked by the same families, who consider preservation of the
land an important part of their heritage. Another painting is from
the last forty acres remaining of a once-large ranch, also
homesteaded in the nineteenth century by the family that still
lives there, one of whom has worked tirelessly in the cause of
thoughtful caretaking of the land."

If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if a blade of grass
springing up in the fields has power to move you, if the simple
things of nature have a message that you understand, rejoice,
for your soul is alive. --
Eleonora Duse

All real works of art look as though they were done in joy.

Slow down and enjoy life. It's not only the scenery you miss
by going too fast - you also miss the sense of where you are
going and why.

Today we are searching for things in nature that are hidden
behind the veil of appearance. We look for and paint this inner,
spiritual side of nature. --
Franz Marc

I would like to paint the way a bird sings. -- Claude Monet

Nature is not only what is visible to the eye - it also shows
the inner images of the soul - the images on the back side of
the eyes. --
