Take some time to discover Yucatán online! I've travelled extensively throughout México and the Yucatán is my favorite part. If you've never been, visit some of the sites below to show you what you're missing. If you have been, use them to remember and plan your next trip.
The Yucatán Peninsula is more than Cancún and Cozumel. While they are a good travel destination, they're only the tip of the iceberg. Other cities like Mérida offer a charm rivalled by few Mexican cities. Mayan ruins abound, from the biggies like Chichén Itzá, Tulum and Uxmal (ooshmal) to the more quite Cobá and various ones along the Ruta Puuc. The caves at Lol-tun are great too!
The descendents of those who built the ruins are still around too. Most people can speak Maya and for many it is their first and dominant language. In the interior cities you still see women in the traditional Mayan dress-the huipil with the justan (the skirt). These women are referred to as "Mestizas."
The Yucatecan food is different from other Mexican foods. First of all, they use the world-famously hot Habanero chile. While it is definately an acquired taste, you don't have to worry because they don't hide it in your food, but put it on the side to take or leave as you like. Try some tamales, wrapped in banana leaves; Potage, a lentil stew; Panuchos, mini tortillas stuffed with beans and meat and deep fried; Cochinita Pibil, pork with anote spice...The list goes on and I'm getting hungry!
