Our Steam Train travelled the southern coast between Douglas and Port Erin. About half of the family took the train ride. Some of the other family rode the daily ferry to Liverpool, England (a 3 hour trip), and since Debbie's uncle, Devore, is NAMA's chaplain, he and his wife, Ruth, stayed in Douglas for convention business. The ride took us through some beautiful farmland. The rolling hills dotted with cattle and sheep reminded us of our own Sonoma County, California. To the right is Debbie's cousin, Glenn. He only stuck his head out the window long enough for the picture as the soot coming off the engine was quite hard on our eyes. Glenn on Steam Train
Wes at Castle Rushen We got off at Castletown, home to one of the two castles on the island. Castle Rushen has been restored for touring. Most of the many rooms had very little light and were quite cool. Naturally, it wasn't until getting in the upper, or royal rooms of the castle that the sun, and the warmth, came in. The castle was primarily used for travelling royalty and was quite secure. Knowing that, the attacking armies would just wait out the soldiers inside. Eventually, the castle's population would run out of food and have to open its gates.
Even though the home is not family owned any more, the homeowner welcomed all 24 of us into her home. The second story and a back section have been added to the home, and the road is now paved but for the most part the area is unchanged. It was special for all of us to be where we've only seen in old pictures. Debbie at her Great Great Grandfather's Home
