Coping with Stress: Comfort for Caregivers

As Zoomers find themselves sandwiched between caring for their children and aging parents we'll ask," What can I do to take care of myself?" and "What can I do about the stress?".

Medical studies support the notion that stress plays a major role in 80% of all diseases. Stress can be linked to an increased risk of heart attack, diabetes, asthma, allergies and backaches. It is important to address the stress in your life.

There are several things that you can do to support your body during times of stress.

1) Nourish yourself physically through exercise. Exercise increases the brain's levels of seretonin, which helps maintain a positive attitude. Stress can deplete the brain's seretonin levels. This is why exercise during times of stress really pays off.

2) Eat well to allow the body optimum nutritional support during times of stress.

3) Choose foods rich in B-complex vitamins (stress relieving vitamins).

4) Drink plenty of water. 2 liters a day is ideal for the average person.

5) Get enough sleep. 7 hours a night is desirable on a regular basis. Meditation before bedtime may help some people. Others may respond to massage or aromatherapy to induce sleep. Essential lavender oil on your pillow is good for relaxation.

Put yourself first sometimes. Even caregivers need to take time off to do what relaxes them. Time with nature, gardening or just relaxing is just as important as accomplishing your "To Do" lists. Time for fun helps you to take your mind off the stresses of your daily chores.

Finally, talk about your concerns with others. The sharing of our experiences lends a special support that allows for us to learn from each other. When you take time for yourself you will find yourself renewed and more enthusiastic about giving to others.
