Q:How Deep Is the River?

This is the classic novice question on any river trip. There is no answer
for it except in context. Many guides have made up pat answers such as
"Deeper than a duck's belly!" or why don't you jump in and find out!"
The actual flow is measured in cubic feet per second ("cfs"). As it flows
over the river bottom terrain, a river will be alternately deep and shallow.
I imagine that questions in general share a similar topography, as do most
answers.
