WOW!!!
What an Exciting Introduction to 2006!

Beat 12, Ballers 10
After 4 consecutive weeks of league rainouts (3 for the Beat), the spring season finally started, later than any season in over 20 years. If you talked to other players today, most of the conversation was about shaking off the rust. The rain not only delayed the season, it cancelled any chance of pre-season practice.

The Beat came out looking plenty rusty in the top of the first, never getting a runner past second. In the bottom of the first, the Ballers turned 2-out error into 4 unearned runs with the help of the deepest homer I've ever seen at Jackson #1, a 1-hopper off the warehouse across the street.

The Beat got on the board in the second with two runs on a single by Kevin Austin (2-3, 2 runs) and doubles by Mark Briscoe (2-3, 2 runs, RBI) and Brian Greenblatt (2-3, 1 run, 2RBI) but went down 1-2-3 in the third.

The Ballers opened up their lead in the bottom of the third with 4 more runs on 5 hits including a double and triple and added another in the 4th inning on the third of 4 beat errors at short. At 9-2, it was not looking good for the boys in gray.

The Beat chipped back with a run in the 5th on a single by Alex Briscoe (1-2, run, BB) and sacrifice fly by Derek Rey (1-2, run, 2RBI). In the 6th, Jim Colletto (2-2, run, SF, BB) reached on a single and scored on Donnell Moodys (2-4, 2RBI) RBI double. And there it was...9-4 heading into the 7th and last inning.

Let the Beat rally begin! Austin and Mark Briscoe opened with singles followed by Alex Briscoe's walk. Brian pushed the first run across with a fielder's choice. That was followed by RBI singles by Greg Lukoski (1-3, run, 2RBI) and Derek. Ballers 9, Beat 7. Up steps the Beat's spring rook, Abraham, picked up at the rainout practice last week. Abraham drove a 2-RBI triple to tie the game at 9 each. Jacq Wilson (2-4, run, RBI) and Gunnar Rosenquist (1-4) followed with singles and Colletto's sac fly made it 11-9. D Moody tacked on more insurance with a single before getting his ass thrown out at second base to end the inning! (this is a test to see if D is actually reading this...ed) When the dust settled, the Beat had gone 8 for 9 with a walk and sac fly in the 7th inning...talk about clutch!!!

The Beat came from 5 runs behind to take a 3 run 12-9 lead, but due to some confusion in the scoring the official score at the time was 11-9. Diaz, the Ballers' 3 spot, started the bottom of the inning with a triple and a 6-3 first out RBI had us thinking 11-10 and sure that the Ballers weren't going down without a fight. Following another quick out and a single, the Ballers' Williams showed balls of steel taking a 3-2 pitch with 2 outs and the tying run on base and watched the ball hit the back of the plate for a free base. Now the tying run was in scoring position. Rivera drove a ball to Lukoski at third who smothered it and fearing being beaten to the bag, tagged out Navarez in the baseline to end the game. (it was discovered some time later that the actual final score was 12-10...see the scoresheet)

Lukoski picked up the game ball for setting up camp at third base in the second half and turning in 3 key outs in the last 2 innings. The first catching a runner rounding the bag and getting him caught in a rundown and tagged by Gunnar at the plate, followed by a couple sweet 5-unassisted outs.

So after a long month of rain, we've finally got one in the books and the Beat stole a game that they never deserved to win until the cards were on the table.
