Welcome to the 2004 Special Edition of the Beat Hall of Fame

The 2004 Beat Old-Timers' Game, June 26, 2004

"I'll tell you something you've always known, my friends–
down to this very day the gods prefer old-timers."

                                            – The Iliad by Homer (23.875-876) ~700B.C.

It had been 14 years since the first Beat Old Timers' game played in the summer of 1990. Thinking back, it was rather silly that we even had an old-timers game after only 3 years in the league, but that's how quickly we changed personnel in those early years. Since 1987 the Beat has had about 80 players on its roster. Nearly 30 of those showed up for the grand fest which may go down in history as the greatest Beat gathering of all time. So many, in fact, that the old-timers team consisting of players that played under Jim Harvey (1987-1993) had a lineup of 15 with the additional players overflowing to the new team.

Special thanks go out to those dedicated gray-bleeders that crossed the country for this event: Jim 'Leather' Harvey and Marc '69' Dal Bianco (from Minneapolis), Eric 'Wax' Meyer and daughter Anita (from Toronto), Frank 'Pepe' Green (St.Louis), and Todd Sattler and Kathy Sattler von Bloom (Bismarck, ND).

By the time the game wrapped we had lost track of the score, but the old-timers made a respectable 2-out comeback in the last inning to finish the game something like 15-8. Considering the gray hair on the field, this was a pretty good showing (even though the 5-time champion newbies were playing musical positions in the field).

Below you'll find a nice collection of game memorabilia from the starting lineups, to photos and post-game remarks. I hope you enjoy this special addition to the Beat Legacy.
