Mini-Tours are an alternative to our standard One-Week Tours

They are different in several important ways...

• They are shorter. They are about half the length of a typical One-Week Tour. This makes them ideal for a long weekend getaway. Or you can package two of them into a week-long vacation. For example: do the Sonoma County Tour in Occidental (three or four days) and then move over to Yountville for the Napa Valley Tour (four days).

• They stay put. Rather than moving from point to point across the map as our One-Week Tours do, Mini-Tours stay in one central location–usually a small resort town–and all the rides radiate out from that hub.

• They are loop routes. This allows us to build a great deal of flexibility into the rides offered..little loops inside medium loops inside big loops, and so on...so that we can offer routes each day for all levels of riders, from very moderate beginners to full-tilt hammers. We won’t be providing detailed route slips for every one of those many routes though. We will provide detailed maps for the area and do a complete route slip for one, marquee ride each day. Then we’ll offer suggestions about several shorter or longer options, giving you enough information to make your choices.

• They are based around motels and inns instead of campgrounds. You can book into one lodging, unpack, and relax for the duration. Of course, the affordable nature of the camp-based tours goes out the window when you stay in lodgings and dine out all the time, but that may not bother you! If it does, we’ll explain how some of these tours can be adapted for staying in nearby campgrounds.

On our One-Week Tours, we recommend specific campgrounds, based on our own surveys. However, with the Mini-Tours based around motels and inns–and with so many of them out there–it goes beyond the scope of this tour packet to survey each and every hotel, inn, and motel in a given town and then assign ratings or make recommendations. We will list the numbers of all the acceptable lodgings we know of in that town, and will make some general comments as to their cost and suitability. You will have to make your own choice. We suggest you consult a travel agent or the California State Automobile Association Tour Book, or do a web search, using links often included in the tour write-ups.

All of these Mini-Tours visit regions covered in the One-Week Tours. In some cases, they use the same roads. In many cases though, they use roads that were left out of the point-to-point tours, or else they use the same roads, but going in the opposite direction. You’ll become much better acquainted with one region on these tours.
