Harvest is Over!!
Cline Cellars Harvest 1998 Report Harvest is finally over! This Thanksgiving will have a whole new meaning at Cline Cellars....thankful November is here and all our grapes have been picked.

The 1998 growing season will always be remembered as the El Niño year. The spring season was very wet and cool with bud break very late and over an extended period of time. Cline Cellars harvest did not begin until September 4, 1998, two weeks later then normal but also one month later than 1997. There were many predications of disaster but Mother Nature was kind to Cline Cellars in October, the miracle month for most of the California wine industry. An extended Indian summer provided temperatures in the upper 80's which finished off many of our later maturing varietals, especially our Carneros vineyards where sugars were significantly behind our Contra Costa grapes.

This years harvest contrasts with 1997, where record crops were harvested. 1998 yields are down between 20% - 50% depending on blocks. Despite low yields and smaller berry sizes, the quality of fruit is impressive. The 1998 harvest promises some great wines.
