El Golpe Machaca La Vieja Casa De la Almeja!
El Golpe es victorioso sobre la Vieja Casa de la Almeja treinta y uno a ocho

Wow...well I don't know where to start with this one. So maybe a little history first.

The Beat first met Old Clamhouse in D league at Parkside back in the spring of 1989 and notched their 11th all win 5-4.  That win was the second straight, come-from-behind 1-run victory for the young, upstart Beat, who were starting to feel their oats as a team in 1989 as the original Beatniks gelled with the long hairs from Connecticut and the ad league guys.  That was the team’s first winning season.

That Beat had lost the first 3 games of the spring ’89 season before sweeping 4 of their last 5 to finish 4-3-1, which included a classic, hard-fought 2-2 tie against the division winning Over the Hill Gang that The Beat would have won had it not been for the phantom backslap of Sean Katz by 3rd base coach Roy Nelson as he rounded for what would have been the winning run.

It wasn't until September of 1994 that the 2 teams met again and this time the Clams snuck away with a one-run victory 9-8 of their own on the final day of the regular season in the Beat’s so-so return to DD.

In July 2005 the Clamhouse came face to face with the 'new' Beat and were handed a 17-6 thrashing, marking a 16-year gap between Beat wins, but only the first of four spankings the Beat would hand the Clams as they shuttled between C and DD.  The 20-4 in the summer of '05 was one of the most lopsided wins in team history...that is, until today.

On Cinco de Mayo '07, the Beat put on a hitting clinic with a 31-8 trouncing of the House of Clams, who were shorthanded as several teammates participated in a tournament.  Whatever the reason, it was the second most runs ever scored by a Beat team (first was a 32-4 embarrassment of the Loose Cannons to the summer '05 Division Champion Beat...that was the week after the 17-6 Clamhouse game).

The Beat left little doubt in this one by ending it in the first 10 to 15 minutes.

Jacq Wilson (5-5, 5 runs, 5 RBI, HR, 2 doubles) started the game with a single followed by walks to Jim Colletto (3-4, 2 runs, 3 RBI, HR, BB) and Mark St.Georges (1-3, 2 runs, RBI, BB). The patience shown by the Beatniks at the plate in the 1st seem to set the stage for the coming onslaught.

Big Daddy Moody (2-5, 3 runs, 2 RBI) reached on the first of many errors by the Clams’ shortstop.  Rookie Tim Smith (3-5, 5 runs, 5 RBI, HR, triple), who had another breakthrough game, drove in Colletto with a single. With one out, Brian Greenblatt (4-5, 3 runs, 3 RBI, HR, double) singled followed by a walk and a fielder's choice. Derek Rey (1-3, run, 2 RBI, SF) returned from a week on the IR following his grounder-in-the-chops incident against Monte Carlo and singled in a run. Gunnar Rosenquist (3-4, 3 runs, RBI) singled in another, and Jacq came up for his second at bat of the inning with a 3 run dinger between the befuddled Old Clamhouse center fielders before the inning ended.

The Beat had put up a quick 10-spot and the Clams were shocked before they even picked up a bat. Once they did, they fared no better as Kevin Austin quickly dispatched the first three batters in order.

The Beat went on to pad their lead and their stats in the second with four more runs capped by Tim's booming opposite-field RBI triple that hit the top of the tall fence in right center and Brian's one-hopper over the center fielder for a 2-run homer. Clamhouse strung a leadoff walk and a few hits together to put three runs on the board but the Beat was still up 14-3 going into the third.

Well, just when you thought it was safe to come out to the park...here come the Beat again. Jacq led off the inning followed by the Thrill's first homer of the year that bounced past the right fielders and caromed along the concrete facing of the tennis courts. With one out, Big Daddy, Tim, Jacque Wilson (3-5, 3 runs, 2 RBI), and Brian all singled. Mondo Lopez (2-3, run, 3 RBI, triple, BB, SF) tripled driving in Q and Brian. D-Rey sacrificed then G, Jacq, JC, and MSG all singled dropping a second 10-spot on the Clams.

The Clams strung a couple hits together to plate one more before the Beat started the fourth 24-4.

The Beat managed only one hit in the fourth inning but two more errors on the shortstop and a sacrifice by Mondo added two more runs.

The Clams had two out in the fourth (and had committed six errors) before the Beat committed its first error on an infield throw. The Clams took advantage of the situation with a couple hits scoring three. Still the Beat was walking away, now up 26-7.

Gunnar led of another rally in the fifth with a single played into a double by the Clam's atrocious outfield. Jacq doubled in G and Jim reached on the shortstop's fourth error of the day. Moody singled in Jacq and Tim capped of his day with the best shot of the day, a huge 3-run jack that cleared the outfield and rolled to the backstop on Jackson #1.

When all was said and done, the Beat had dismantled the depleted Old Clamhouse 31-8. Tim walked away with his second consecutive game ball for his triple, homer, 5-run, 5 RBI game. Though not to go unnoticed, Jacq turned in his own monster day of cincos with a 5-5, HR, 2 doubles, 5 run, 5 RBI performance. These two guys just turned in a season in a game. The team as a whole hit a monster .553 with a .957 slugging percentage and 1.214 OPS. And, of course, la perra de la cerveza del día es Mondo Lopez.

Next up, arch-nemesis and former Flor de Cana...La Libertad. La Libertad won a tight marquee match up of the undefeated today going to 5-0 and handing Monte Carlo their first loss, dropping slick Vic Loggins’ squad to 4-1.

The team has their work cut out for them, but the Beat is on fire having scored 51 runs in the last two games while allowing only 14. Time to show what this team is made of and knock this monkey off our back. GO BEAT!!!
