We are just back from a two
week family and friends trip
to our
vacation home on the
Kenai peninsula. The sockeye
fishing on the Kenai was
fast and easy despite the
high / cold river flows
during the latter part of
the trip. A lake behind
Skilak glacier breached the
glacier and brought the
river flows up nearly
two feet during our stay.
While this dirtied the river
and cooled it by over
10 degrees the sockeye
fishing ranged from
consistent to fantastic. On
those days when over 30K
sockeyes would enter the
river we would limit in as
little as 15 to 30 minutes
and on the slower days (less
than 10K fish entering the
river) it
would take us 3 to 5 hours
for our 3 fish limits.
(Left: My 16 year old son
Jake with the day's catch at
the Kenai center. Below
Jake, my brother Pete and
son Tyler and I with a lot
of filleting ahead of us).
We worked a number of areas
from the public access areas
to a couple of friends
backyards who are blessed to
have riverfront property on
the lower river, to hike in
spots on the upper river
around Jim's Landing. With
the cold flows the fish were
HOT and hard to hang on to.
I would estimate that our
overall hookup to land
ration at about 35%, at
best.
With the high flows the king
action was tough so we opted
to concentrate on sockeyes
and leave the king fishing
to the pros. Val Early from
Early fishing reported some
huge fish this past week
with kings to 60 pounds.
The
razor clamming was good with
big crowds turning out to
take advantage of the -5
foot tides last week but
easy limits of 60 clams per
angler were the rule.
We got in just one day of
halibut fishing with Steve
Smith with easy limits of
big halibut running from 30
to 70 pounds.
We rounded out the days
quadding on our local beaches
and exploring the backwoods
trails and catching up on
chores around the house.
The weather was overcast
with frequent light rain and
showers almost daily.
The past two weeks seemed
like three days and I can't
wait to go back in the fall
for silvers, steelhead and
ducks.
We are looking ahead to
another fun packed summer so
come on up and join in on
the action. If you have any
questions regarding our

Kenai Peninsula CABIN

general please give us a

will be more than happy to
assist you.
